Apple ID password requirements

Apple takes security seriously, and your Apple ID password is your first line of defense. To protect your account, Apple requires that every new password:

  • Is at least 8 characters long
  • Contains at least one number
  • Contains at least one uppercase letter
  • Contains at least one lowercase letter
  • Is not the same as your Apple ID email address
  • Has not been used as your Apple ID password recently
  • Is not in any known data breach (Apple silently blocks these)

For the full reference, see our Apple ID password requirements guide. Our generator above bakes every rule in so the password is accepted on the first try.

Why your new Apple ID password keeps getting rejected

The four most common reasons we see Apple reject a new password:

  1. No digit. Purely-alphabetic passwords are always rejected.
  2. Only lowercase. You need at least one uppercase letter somewhere.
  3. Leaked password. Apple cross-checks the haveibeenpwned breach corpus and silently blocks any password that has appeared in a public breach.
  4. Recently-used password. Apple keeps a short history of your previous Apple ID passwords and refuses repeats.

The generator above avoids all four. If you would prefer a step-by-step walkthrough, see how to create a strong password for Apple ID.

The importance of two-factor authentication (2FA)

While a strong password is essential, it's not enough on its own. For an extra layer of security, we strongly recommend enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) on your Apple ID. With 2FA, you'll need to provide two pieces of information to log in: your password and a six-digit verification code sent to a trusted device.

This means that even if someone manages to steal your password, they won't be able to access your account without also having access to one of your trusted devices. Apple's official support documentation explains exactly how to turn it on for iPhone, iPad and Mac.

How to change your Apple ID password

If you're concerned that your Apple ID password has been compromised, or if you just want to update it for security reasons, you can easily change it. The steps vary by device.

  • iPhone or iPad: Settings → [your name] → Password & Security → Change Password
  • Mac: System Settings → Apple ID → Password & Security → Change Password
  • Web: sign in at appleid.apple.com → Sign-In and Security → Password

In every case you'll be asked to enter your current password and then your new one. Have the new password ready in your clipboard from the generator above before you start, so the session doesn't time out.

Why use a password generator for your Apple ID?

It can be tempting to use a password that's easy to remember — your pet's name, your birthday, an old phone number. The problem is that those patterns are exactly what attackers try first. A password generator creates a random, complex password that is mathematically much harder to crack.

Our tool lets you customise length and which character types to include, so you can build a password that's both secure and accepted by Apple. Curious about how your existing passwords stack up? Use the password strength checker to test them.

Frequently asked questions

A strong Apple ID password is at least 12 characters long, mixes uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers and symbols, and has never been used on any other site. Apple's minimum is 8 characters with one uppercase, one lowercase and one number, but 12+ is the modern recommendation.

Use the generator at the top of this page. Set length to at least 12 (16 is better), leave all character types checked, click Generate, then Copy. The generator ensures every Apple requirement is met so the password is accepted on the first try.

Apple rejects passwords that lack at least 8 characters, an uppercase letter, a lowercase letter, or a number. It also blocks passwords found in known data breaches and ones you have used before. Our generator avoids all of these.

Yes. The password is generated entirely in your browser using crypto.getRandomValues — the Web Crypto API standard. Nothing is sent to our servers, logged, or stored. Close the tab and the password is gone.
